Most people are surprised to learn that Mars is one of the world's largest pet food manufacturers and veterinary care companies. We began producing pet food in 1935, and our top brands now include WHISKAS®, PEDIGREE®, CESAR®, NUTRO®, ROYAL CANIN® and BANFIELD®.

Our success as a pet care company is based on our passion for creating A BETTER WORLD FOR PETSTM. We do this by delivering a wide range of pet foods and services to meet the nutritional needs of different pets, breeds and health conditions, and makes this quality accessible, whether you buy your pet food at your local grocery store, or through a specialty pet center.

Much of our pet health and nutrition strategy is based on work by The Waltham Centre for Pet Nutrition, which pursues collaborative research with veterinary professionals and pet care scientists worldwide to advance understanding of animal well-being. See the case study for more details.

Information

We have a responsibility to provide clear and meaningful information about our products and their contents so people can make educated choices about what their pets eat. Beyond food, we are providing information about pets and pet ownership. For example, we provide:

  • Feeding guides, informed by comprehensive research into the energy needs of pets of different ages, genders, environments, activity levels and sizes as well as new evidence linking diet to particular health issues
  • Suggested feeding amounts to help owners manage their pet's weight, which, for example, can be found on our U.K. PEDIGREE® and global NUTRO® websites
  • Advice on the importance of veterinary care is an important part of keeping pets healthy. Through client interaction, consumer outreach programs, social media, our websites, BANFIELD® Pet Hospital and our GREENIES® pet treat brand, we seek to educate pet owners on the importance of taking their pets to the veterinarian on a regular basis.
  • Information and resources on socially responsible pet ownership, including how to choose the right pet for your family through our Pet Information Advisory Services in Australia
  • Information on the ways pets and their owners can help each other live healthier, happier lives through THE POWER OF PETS®
  • Our major BANFIELD® scientific study on pet health: The State of Pet Health Report

Renovation

All our petfoods whether specialty or supermarket brands, are based on extensive and evolving research into pet nutrition. Our scientific insights into protein, amino acid, fat content, vitamin and mineral requirements and macronutrient profiles all ensure that we formulate high-quality foods. Every pet food we manufacture is based on the "gold standard" nutritional guidelines for pet nutrition developed by The Waltham Centre for Pet Nutrition.

Our BANFIELD® Pet Hospitals provide medical services to millions of pets through local Banfield veterinarians in the U.S., who each year gather large amounts of clinical and epidemiological data. These scientific insights help Mars continue to improve pet food products and veterinary services.

Innovation

We understand different pet's needs and provide appropriate nutrition for different life stages, lifestyles and breeds of pets. We have pioneered a number of science-based products to provide specialist nutrition for:

  • Cognitive and cardiovascular function
  • Canine gum disease
  • Digestive and urinary problems
  • Weight and joint problems
  • Allergies
  • Breed-specific requirements

Since its inception in 1967, Royal Canin has developed unique and long-term collaborations with various research partners, including breeders and veterinary schools from around the world, to offer better understanding of the role that nutrition plays in the health of dogs and cats. Royal Canin has been a forerunner in pet health nutrition research, producing the first diet exclusively for large-breed dogs, the first diet tailor-made for specific breeds, petfood which combines vitamins and amino acids to fortify the skin's barrier to allergens, as well as petfood customized for different lifestages and lifestyle of pets.

The Waltham Centre is a leading scientific authority on pet nutrition and well-being and has been driving scientific research in this area for nearly 50 years.
